SUMMARY:In the Shadow of Big Red Eye
DESCRIPTION:Mike Familant\, full-time Bigfoot researcher\, producer\, and lead investigator of the documentary series In the Shadow of Big Red Eye\, will be at the Rangeley Public Library on Wednesday July 8th at 6:00 PM to discuss his investigation of the Big Foot phenomenon. Mike has traveled across the United States for over 15 years\, from the swamps of Florida to the deep forests of Maine\, documenting evidence\, interviewing witnesses\, and exploring some of the most remote wilderness areas in North America. His journey began about 15 years ago when\, on his very first camping trip in the vast North Florida wilderness\, five fist-sized rocks crashed through the pine canopy at 4 AM\, landing just feet from where he sat. When a friend tossed a rock back\, a 15-pound boulder slammed into the ground beside them. In that instant\, they determined that they were not dealing with a person\, and he changed the entire direction of his life. Since then\, Mike’s mission has been twofold: first\, to investigate the Bigfoot phenomenon with honesty\, curiosity\, and real fieldwork\, and second\, to inspire families to get outside\, explore nature\, and rediscover the wonder of the world around them. This hour-long family-friendly program blends storytelling\, science\, field investigation\, and audience interaction. It includes a full multimedia PowerPoint presentation\, authentic evidence collected over 15+ years\, local legends from Maine\, thermal footage\, audio recordings\, track casts\, and field photos. Mike will share behind-the-scenes stories from expeditions across the country followed by a Q & A session and ending with a time for photos\, autographs\, and one-on-one conversations.

SUMMARY:Goode Vibrations of the Dead River Valley
DESCRIPTION:Join author Amy Safford on Wednesday\, July 15th at the Rangeley Public Library as she shares from her book\, Good Vibrations of the Dead River Valley. In this second book of the Goode Vibrations series\, Penelope Goode tries to make sense of her ability to see into the past. She travels to the mountains of northwestern Maine to visit a relative threatened with losing his property. She finds herself immersed in a community of hunters\, loggers\, and fishermen. Her visions take her back in time to the days before Flagstaff and Dead River were flooded by the Power Company. Sinking even deeper into the past\, she dreams of Benedict Arnold’s epoch expedition through the untamed wilderness of the valley. Pennie discovers injustices of the past and the freedom America fought for 250 years ago.

SUMMARY:Mourning Maine's Dead: Victorian Hair Jewelry & Crafts
DESCRIPTION:In 19th-century Maine\, death was ever present. To grapple with loss\, Victorian Mainers could turn to art and craft to mourn and remember their loved ones. Their material-of-choice was human hair. Mary Baker made a good living crafting flowers\, wreaths\, and jewelry from human hair. Her Portland home-based business tapped into a national craze for Victorian hair jewelry which not only memorialized the dead\, but also connected the living. From snips of a loved one’s hair in a locket\, to braided hair friendship rings exchanged between schoolgirls\, to a large-scale wreath of flowers containing the hair of an entire family\, Mainers embraced hair art as a symbol of mourning the dead and celebrating the living. \nOn Wednesday\, July 22nd\, at 6:00 PM\, Dr. Elizabeth DeWolfe will be speaking at the Rangeley Public Library. Elizabeth DeWolfe is Professor of History at the University of New England where she teaches courses in women’s history\, archival research\, and American culture. Dr. DeWolfe is a historical detective: she hunts archives for the traces of ordinary women\, piecing together their all-but-forgotten lives from faint clues. \nDr. DeWolfe’s latest work\, Alias Agnes: The Notorious Tale of a Gilded Age Spy\, reveals the tale of a Maine stenographer turned undercover detective. Her previous work includes the award-winning book The Murder of Mary Bean which illustrates the great opportunities as well as the dangers for young women working in the textile mills of the 1830s and 1840s. DeWolfe has also written about the Shakers\, Victorian hair jewelry makers\, and a Maine woman’s battle with bullfrogs in the Great Depression. \nThis program is offered free of charge\, but we request that you sign up so that we may know how many people are coming. Please stop by the library\, call (207)864-5529\, or RSVP on our website www.rangeleylibrary.org .

SUMMARY:The Mystery of Maine's Wildlife
DESCRIPTION:Announcing a one-hour presentation highlighting some of Maine’s more secretive wildlife species.  We rarely see these creatures but there is much to learn about them and their lifestyles.  This presentation will feature Atlantic puffins\, black bears\, Northern saw-whet owls\, Canada lynx\, and the American mink along with some surprises.  Writer and photographer Ed Robinson spends a great deal of time studying the natural world around us and will share some insights about these fascinating animals.  The presentation will entertain and educate with stunning photos\, biological facts\, and stories with a Q&A session to follow as appropriate. \nEd grew up in the beautiful Finger Lakes region of Western New York and developed a deep love for wild creatures and the environment.  Since moving to Orr’s Island\, Maine from England in 2007\, he has been exploring this beautiful state and writing about the creatures that live here.  Ed recently published his second book titled Nature Notes from Maine: Puffins\, Black Bears\, Raccoons & More\, with the profits benefiting public education and conservation. \nIn reviewing Ed’s first book George Smith\, former Outdoor News Editor for the Bangor Daily News noted\, “This book is full of great stories about Maine’s wild animals.  The stories are highly entertaining and brought back memories of my own wildlife encounters.  These are the wild creatures that make life in Maine very special.”  A reviewer for the Natural Resources Council of Maine described the writing as “lucid and tranquil.” \nEd’s books are available for sale at https://hhltmaine.square.site/shop/books-guides/2\, book stores around Maine or from Amazon.

SUMMARY:The Pyramids of Túcume: The Archaeology of an Ancient Peruvian City
DESCRIPTION:Túcume was a pyramid center and city from about 1100 AD until the Spanish Conquest in 1532 AD. In the late 1980s and early 1990s\, Norwegian explorer Thor Heyerdahl (the Kon Tiki man) organized an archaeological project at the site and hired Dan Sandweiss to co-direct the research. In this talk\, Dan describes the finds at Túcume and explores with the audience some of the possible positive and negative lessons for today drawn from the ways that the inhabitants met daily challenges and responded to crises. This is an illustrated talk. \nProfessor Dan Sandweiss will be speaking at the Rangeley Public Library on Wednesday\, September 2nd\, at 6:00 PM. Dan is a professor of anthropology and climate studies at the University of Maine and a member of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences. He is the immediate past president of the Society for American Archaeology. Most of Dan’s research takes place on the coast of Peru\, where he studies ancient fishing and climate change\, especially El Niño. Early in his career\, he did archaeology in Guatemala\, Honduras\, and Cuba\, where (thanks to his long association with Thor Heyerdahl)\, he had the chance to have coffee with Fidel Castro. Dan enjoys talking with folks about archaeology and exploring how lessons from the past might have relevance here and now. \nThis program is part of the Maine Speaks Program which is funded by the Maine Humanities Council. Maine Humanities uses books\, poetry\, and big ideas to bring people together to discuss issues of importance. Through the programs they run and the grants they provide\, they encourage a deeper understanding of ourselves and one another\, building lasting connections and reaching diverse\, multigenerational\, and rural audiences with programs that are engaging\, and collaborative. \nMaine Humanities is a connector; they work across the state of Maine to connect people with books\, communities with ideas\, and strangers with one another. They work with other organizations through grant-making and the implementation of programs. They are a connector of people; they plug into communities and offer a way to experience meaningful interpersonal communication. These connections strengthen our society and help shape the future of Maine. \nSupport for these programs comes from the National Endowment for the Humanities\, foundations\, corporations\, individuals\, and the State of Maine (100% of funding from the State goes to their grants program). \nIf you would like to attend this free event\, please stop by the library\, call (207)864-5529\, or RSVP on the library’s website www.rangeleylibrary.org .
